Lost Shops of Brighton

Following the same format as last year's successful Lost Streets of Brighton calendar, Lost Shops of Brighton - QueenSpark Calendar 2008 features some striking photographs, most of which are previously unseen by the public. All the shops featured in the calendar have long since disappeared and viewed together in this special collection, conjure a wonderfully evocative portrait of the city's past.
The quote here from the Shops Book - Neil Griffiths (Queenspark Books, 1978) gives us a fascinating idea of Brighton shops and businesses in the 19th century:

"The 1875 directory for East Brighton listed 35 bootmakers, 3 breweries, 19 dress-makers, 15 tailors, 2 watchmakers, 2 tinners, 2 brushmakers and 2 basketmakers. By 1974 they had virtually all disappeared, apart from one jeweller and one costumier."

If you're wondering why we're not promoting an East Brighton Bygones calendar for 2008, it is because we're not planning to produce one. Three EBB members are on a training course this autumn to learn the skills necessary to create our own by next year!
