Meetings are 2-4pm on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at The Valley Social Centre in Whitehawk Way, BN2 5HE.

A list of speakers for the rest of the year 2016 will be added as we get confirmations. We would love to see some new faces joining us.

SPEAKERS FOR 2016

13TH JANUARY 2016: To open the New Year's season of talks Paul Green - Argus Historian will present his “ Step Back in Time” talk which is based on the history of the Argus since its first copy on 30 March 1880 !

He will bring along old copies, photos and other memorabilia for people to look through as well as a quiz which is very interactive.

10 FEBRUARY: Our very own Jean Clack will talk on family history.

9TH MARCH: David Simkin, a regular visitor to our group, returning with a talk on The History of Portraiture.

13TH APRIL: AGM this month plus a chat on family holiday amongst our members.

11TH MAY: To be confirmed

8TH JUNE: Geoff Mead, another of our regular speakers with a topic still to be decided!

13TH JULY: A members chit chat this month.  Bring some stories of War Time at school.

10TH AUGUST: To be confirmed.

14TH SEPTEMBER: To be confirmed.

12TH OCTOBER: Paul Green from The Argus, back by popular demand.

9TH NOVEMBER: Paul Jordan, from the History Centre will tell us all about Brighton in the 1920's and 30's

14TH DECEMBER: Will be our Christmas get together, theme to be decided during the year.

SPEAKERS FOR 2015

February 2015 : Alan Hayes - The History of Fishing in Brighton

March 11th 2015 : Alan Hayes will be returning to continue his wonderful talk on the History of Fishing in Brighton.

April 8th 2015 : THIS MEETING WILL BE OUR AGM

May 13 2015 : Paul Gillett and his friend Keith Turner, will be speaking on growing up in Brighton from a blind person's perspective.

June 10th 2015 : Jon Sygrave of Archaeology South East join us to tell us all about the history of Whitehawk Hill. 

July 8th 2015 : David Simkin will present a talk with photographs of East Brighton in Victorian and Edwardian times

August 12th 2015 : Dave Homewood will be back again to continue on from his previous talk, with different gramophones and anecdotes.

September 9th 2015 : Chris Horlock is returning with this title  "Lost Theatres of Brighton"

October 14th 2015 :  Beryl Tucknott will speak a little more on the cinemas and theatres and it will be an informal session for us all to join in with

20th February - an extra event!  We will be sharing some of our images at a Community showcase event at The Manor in Manor Road, Whitehawk, between 2-4pm. Do join us, bring photos and stories to record and share please

East Brighton Bygones will be exhibiting our images in

St Cuthman's Church

ALSO

Discover, play and be entertained at this action-packed community festival in Whitehawk. With traditonal crafts, exhibitions, live entertainment, stalls, food, games, sport and children’s activities. Special features include an educational tour of Whitehawk Camp, a 5,500 year-old neolithic site, home to Brighton’s earliest farming community that is older than Stonehenge! Plus: Bird of Prey flying displays, children's pony rides, sporting tournaments, an audio exhibition on the history of Whitehawk, live stage entertainment and more! Fun for all ages.

13 August 2014: David Simkin will return with his amazing expertise to enlighten us with his talk "Dating Family Photographs"

 The talk will outline the changes in photographic processes between 1841 and 1910 and provides a guide to the methods of dating Victorian and Edwardian photographs.

10 September: Chris Horlock will join us to share his knowledge with his talk on "Whitehawk"

8 October: Dave Homewood talk this month is "Old Gramophones"

12 November 2014: Peter Hill: (Subject to be arranged)

10 December: Probably our Christmas Party!

2013

FEBRUARY 11TH

This is your chance to share stories of your working life with the group. Some members have prepared their stories already for this meeting, but there will be opportunities for others to chip in along the way.

We shall also be chatting more about plans for our 10th Birthday celebrations on 13th March and events planned for later in the year too.

MARCH 13TH.

CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER 

It is 10years since we started Bygones - so we will celebrate today with cake and chatter. This will be a members only meeting. 

Joining us is Geoff Mead to give a talk about inter-war housing entitled "Scattered Squalor and Downland Homes"

APRIL 10TH

Geoff's talk, above, will now be during the first half of this meeting, open to all.

After tea break will be members only as it is our AGM.  We would like as many members as possible here to give their voice - what do you want the club to do?(due to illness our AGM will now be held in May)

MAY 8TH

This will now be the space for our AGM.

After tea break will be a very different format to our usual. We will be collaborating with Cultures Club for an intergenerational meeting.  Becky and Ned will bring some youngsters along to share stories of life 'then and now' with our group.

JUNE 12TH

We are hoping to use this meeting as a workshop to prepare for our exhibition at St Cuthman's Church next month.  Our images need sorting, cataloguing, labelling and linking!  Please come and help!

AUGUST 14TH

Judith Kinnison-Bourke will join us again for one of her dramatic stories from The Workhouse this time.  The title is "The Workhouse and the Weald"  This covers the years 1905 - 1926 at Tenterton Union Workhouse and the life of Dorothy Drury.

SEPTEMBER 11TH

Peter Hill is returning to us with a talk about the windmills of Sussex.

OCTOBER 9TH

Our meeting this month will give members a chance to tell their stories.  We can help you by scanning some images for sharing with the group as you chat to us.  What will we find out this time?

November 13th: Trevor Cox will return to speak about  "Brighton & Hove in the Great War" December 11th:Will be our Christmas celebration with food and jollity.  This meeting is only open to members
