I was attending Fawcett at the time that this photo appeared in the Bison. This was a dedicated bunch of teachers in times when conditions were not great. I for one, owe so much to most of these men.

I can name about ten teachers from when I was at Fawcett, Mr Davis, Mr Dyer, Mr Lowe, Mr Benson, Mr Harris, Mr holland, Mr Pollard, Mr Bolton, Mr Patterson and Mr Podmore. Good old times

Seeing the comment by Malcolm Marshall brought back lots of memories. Malcolm was the Head Boy and took me under his wing and got me through those first few nervous hours, being rather shy and nervous I needed someone like this.

Thank you John Wignall (26/03/2010). At least someone remembers me for a good reason. Of my class mates in the 1954/55 era, I can recall certain names: Robert Howell,Chas Clark, William Proctor, John Gorton, Michael Varney, Robert Langer. Are there any survivors out there?

In retrospect, happy days. I was at Fawcett from 51 to 56 and reckon the education I had was better than my children who have been to public school. I was not bright enough for the grammar school but Fawcett really brought out the best in me and I cannot thank Mr Dyer enought for the encouragement he gave me in athletics and for his old pair of spikes. I have done some research as to the person the school was named after and found him to be one of the last "gentleman explorers" who dissapeared in the Amazonian jungle in the 20s

Malcolm Marshall was respected by all younger boys at Fawcett in 54 when I started, wasn't Michael Varney deputy head boy?

It is great to see names of "old boys" emerging on this page. Tony Brookes - I remember you as an excellent track athlete really deserving of Mr Dyer's spikes. Few of us could have afforded such a luxury in those days. We were definitely priviliged to have such caring teachers. And (Terry Hyde 12/11/2010) - Michael Varney became Head Boy when I emigrated to South Africa in 1955. He was a great chap whom I have recently tried to locate. Does anyone know of his whereabouts?

With reference to Tony Brookes as to whom Fawcett School was named after, I would like to point out with respect that Fawcett was named after Lt Col John Fawcett who was the first Mayor of Brighton in 1854, Col Fawcett died in Jersey in 1878, Fawcett was formed in 1946 by closing the Intermediate School and making the girls part a seperate entity,The girls School was named after Margaret Hardy who was Mayor of Brighton in 1933. Hope this is of some interest to some of you former Fawcett School Boys.

Fawcett is Henry Fawcett (1833 to 1884). Prof of political economy at Cambridge. Made Post Master General in 1880, elected Brighton MP in 1865. Also famous campaigner for women's suffrage.
