The Body's moved from  farming in Kent, mainly hops, to Brighton in 1890. J A Body opened a Brewery in Brighton. Had 10 children 5 girls and 5 boys. The Aunties were supposed to have gone to Roedean, but the school found no trace of them. The uncles went to Brighton College. One Harold went to Canada via the Montreal Bank London. Joined the Canadian Volunteer force. Was injured in France and hospitalized in England. Returned to France and died 1916 at Mount Sorrell Ypres. He is remembered in the Brighton college book and on the memorial plaque in the school chapel also the Montreal Book of the dead. My Grand father played Rugby for England in the 2nd and 3rd official internationals against Scotland at Glasgow 1872 and the London Oval 1873. He is listed on the ESPNSCRUM site and had a article on the site in November 2010 appx 140 years later. He went to Tonbridge school and with 3 other old boys formed the very successful Gypsies R F C. He married Mary Alice Indcox in New York and set up home in Canada opened a Flax Oil Works at Point Douglas Avenue and lived at 9 George Avenue Winnipeg. Two of his children were born Winnipeg Hospital Mabel and Frederick. The latter married Bella Alvina Whitely and had two children after returning to Canada from Brighton. James Alfred returned to Brighton and lived in Cromwell road. None of the aunties ever married, but had successful employment. Three of the uncles married and had children. J A Body returned to Kent and was ill for several years before he died. They are still remembered even some I never knew, but have found out so much about them thanks to the internet and what is stored in peoples diaries, parish sites etc.

Hello, It's not often that you come across another group of people with the same strange surname. My family used to live around Kent and Sussex too (Grandfather and great grandfather's generation). Are we related?

Hi Sophie. I think most of the Body's were or are related coming from Sussex and Kent. There are Body's in Brighton where my grandparents lived for some time who I cannot relate to at the moment. I still have some cousins farming in Kent and they all relate to our nearest who where John Body and Sarah Pinyon. Places of interest Bodiam, Dallington, Sandhurst, Wittersham and a few more in Kent and Sussex. You will not be on a tree still being alive some cannot check. If you give me a relation I will check. I am into history mainly so know most places, farms, cottages and what they did. My email is I.body@sky.com. Hope I hear from you in some way ivor

Hello Sophie. Did leave a reply but thought it was waiting to be published, but cannot see one is outstanding. Most of the Kent Body's are related and a lot of the Sussex ones, not all and not all the Brighton ones. I have many cousins in Kent and Middlesboro and have a big tree but cannot see a Sophie. Can you say who your great grandparents were and date of birth or death please. I did send a note to all the Sophie Body's on facebook, but no one came back. ivor

Ivor, My Body family came from Battersea and I believe there were some relatives in Brighton. I also think I had a relative who died at Brighton station near 1900. My own grandparents moved out of London in the 60's and operated a sweet/tobacconist shop in Lewes near the corner of Melbourne Road. I now live in Melbourne Australia and am researching the family tree - please email me for any details we could work on.
