Snippets - Homing pigeons and custard

Memories from Rosemary Deacon

By Tricia Leonard

On the way to our last history meeting Rosemary told me another couple of little little gems that we wanted to share with everyone!

Her Mum and Dad (Rosina May and James Alfred Horrobin) were very keen followers of the Albion, and on the rare occasion that Rosina could not make the match James would take Bill, their pigeon, to the match in a basket.  At the interval he would be released and find his way home with the half time score tied to his leg!  He was not the only one to do this.

James Alfred Horrobin also told his daughter, Rosemary that as a young boy he had to run errands for his Mother, Grace, at lunchtime.  She used to cook for people.  One story is about taking an egg custard to a sick person - apparently there wasn't much left of the custard on arrival after little hungry boy's finger had been dipping in and out on the journey!
